The Challenge for Freshers
As a fresher, you have limited work experience. That makes it tempting to pad your resume with irrelevant details, use a fancy template, or write a long objective statement that says nothing.
Don't. Recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds scanning a resume. Here's what actually works for freshers in India.
The Ideal Resume Format for Freshers
Use a reverse-chronological single-column format. It's the most ATS-compatible and the most familiar to Indian recruiters. Keep it to one page.
Sections to Include (in this order):
- Name and Contact Info — phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub (if you have one)
- Career Objective — 2–3 lines max, specific to the role
- Education — degree, college, percentage/CGPA, year
- Skills — technical skills relevant to the job
- Projects — 2–3 projects with tech stack and outcome
- Internships / Work Experience — even short internships count
- Certifications — only relevant ones
What NOT to Include
- Photo (unless specifically asked — most modern companies don't want it)
- Date of birth, marital status, religion — not relevant and can cause bias
- "References available on request" — wastes space, assumed
- Hobbies like "reading, travelling, music" — generic and meaningless
- Class 10/12 details if you have a graduation degree
Writing a Strong Career Objective
Bad:
"Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills and grow professionally."
Good:
"Computer Science graduate with hands-on experience in React and Node.js, looking to contribute to product development at a fast-growing startup. Built 3 full-stack projects including a real-time chat app and an AI-powered resume tool."
Be specific. Name your skills. Name what you've built.
How to Handle the "No Experience" Problem
You don't need a job to have experience. Recruiters accept:
- Personal projects — GitHub repos, side projects, apps you built
- Open source contributions — even small PRs count
- Freelance work — any paid work, even one project
- College projects — if they involved real tech
List each project with: what you built, what tech you used, and what the outcome was.
Fresher Resume Mistakes to Avoid
- Using a heavily designed template — ATS can't parse it
- Listing skills you don't actually have
- Writing a 2-page resume with no real experience to fill it
- Using the same resume for every job — tailor it slightly for each role
- Not proofreading — spelling errors are an instant rejection
